relieve stress

A while ago I accompanied a dear friend to the doctor to lend support while she had an invasive diagnostic procedure. She was very anxious. I was allowed to be in the room with her while she waited for the doctor, and I did a gentle relaxation exercise with her. Then I asked her to use EFT to allay her anxiety. The doctor allowed me to remain during the procedure and praised her for going through it well even though it was painful. She was quite proud of herself.

Afterwards she was fine, but was ordered to rest at home. A few hours later I looked in on her and found that she was pretty wiped out but feeling OK. As we talked I reminded her that the brain retains the memories of scary and uncomfortable moments we experience as we go through life. Therefore, what occurs in our present life often triggers the body to relive the past too. I have known my friend for many years and have seen her through a number of medical emergencies, surgeries, biopsies, and painful illnesses. It dawned on me that her exhaustion might be a result of her body’s collective memories of all the punishment it had tolerated over the years.

I suggested that she use EFT and say, “Even though my body has endured many painful, frightening, invasive traumas, I survived and deserve to heal.” I encouraged her to continue tapping, “Even though all the procedures were done with good intent to heal me and keep me well, I am now releasing all the times and all the ways my body has been traumatized.” She added, “I am now letting go of all the times and all the ways I have been in pain. I am freeing my body from all its memories of being invaded, injected, cut, cauterized, prodded, and bruised.” As she tapped she felt a release of anxiety and sighed. Her shoulders relaxed. It felt good. I suggested that she do a minute or two of tapping every few hours, talking lovingly to the body that has “taken a licking and keeps on ticking.“

Everyone has had many experiences with medical and dental visits that helped us while asking our body to tough it out. We usually try to forget the experience and let it fade in our memory, like women comparing their bravery in childbirth and how many hours of labor they went through. Let’s thank our bodies now by giving them an EFT treatment to release all its wounds.

You don’t have to be experiencing pain to do this successfully. Just make a list of some of the most unpleasant assaults your body has received and start by using the same statements my friend used. Once you get in the swing of it you can make up your own version based on your life experience. When you feel finished remind yourself that often in order to heal we must endure discomfort. Be thankful for the wonderful medical people who have helped you and thank your body for bearing the burdens bravely.

Imaginary EFT Comes to the Rescue

by gloria on April 13, 2010

This morning I had to go to a local medical facility for an ultrasound procedure and left the house early to make sure that I had enough time for checking in. This place runs like clockwork so it is really important to get there on time or else it affects everyone’s schedule. When I tried to start my car I discovered that it was dead, dead, dead. OMG!

I ran into the house in a frantic state and yelled to my husband that he had to drive me to my appointment. Unfortunately, he was on his way out to a meeting that he couldn’t call off. Thank goodness he has jumper cables and was able to get me on my way in record time. I made it under the wire, registered, and was called in to the scan room immediately.

The only trouble was that I had taken my anxiety along with me. My body was still in a state of panic. I couldn’t catch my breath. The woman doing the ultrasound asked me to be as still as I could, but I was afraid that my body would start to shake because I still felt unsettled. Since I have been tapping for more than a dozen years I immediately realized that although I was immobilized I could help myself.

I started to imagine myself putting gentle pressure on each of the EFT points. One by one I thought of how it would feel to touch and hold each energy point: the eyebrow point, outside of the eye, under the eye, under the nose, under the lower lip, under the collarbone and under the arm. The point that usually has an immediate calming effect on me is under the collarbone, and although that was the area she was touching, I simply imagined that her hand was not there and put my attention to that spot. After only 4 imaginary rounds I found my mind wandering to other plans for the day and I realized that I was completely at peace.

I still marvel at how powerfully EFT works anytime and anywhere. I once had a client who was a quadriplegic and could not tap himself. He would not let anyone else do it for him either so I suggested that he use imaginary EFT. He was thrilled and reported that when he used it his muscle spasms went away.

The nice thing about imaginary EFT is that no one else can tell when you are using it. One woman I know used it while dining with a friend when she felt overcome by a sudden fear. Another uses it in his doctor’s waiting room when he is anxious about hearing the results of a medical test. He discovered that it brought his blood pressure down.

The more you use EFT, whether using your imagination or your fingers, the more you will remember to use it when the going gets tough. Relief is as close as your imagination.
