When I was in college I dated a guy who shared an apartment in an old rundown building with three other students. They were typical college boys who were busy doing everything but keeping the place clean. One of the biggest problems for many city dwellers that live in these kinds of places is combating cockroaches. Any overnight guests were warned not to walk into the kitchen barefoot at night unless they wanted an unwelcome surprise!
These clever young men had created a very unusual ritual that they performed every Friday night. Once it was dark, they turned off all the lights in the apartment and waited. When they thought the roaches were out and about in the messy kitchen looking for crumbs of food, they would put on heavy shoes, tiptoe to the kitchen, suddenly turn on the light and joyfully run through the sea of vermin stomping on the bugs and yelling. This wild and primitive rite was something to behold.
What does exterminating cockroaches have to do with eliminating problems using EFT? The first step in practicing EFT is to target a problem, negative emotion or belief that you want to get rid of. Think of your negative thoughts as a horde of cockroaches that scurry through your mind at the least provocation, are ugly, annoying and keep proliferating.
Choose a specific goal and tune in to rate how upset you feel from zero to ten when you think of this event, feeling or idea. Next create a set-up phrase to help you focus on your task. Perhaps you are upset because someone at work is not completing projects on time and this is affecting the whole department. Maybe one of your children is doing poorly in school and you are worried, or you are having trouble paying your bills.
Tap your Karate Chop spot and say, “Even though I have this problem, I am committed to resolving it.” or “Even though I am feeling ____, I am tapping about this now.” As you focus on this issue it is as if you are getting ready to turn the light on to reveal the predicament and eliminate it.
Tapping on the remaining EFT acupressure points is like stomping on roaches. As you focus on your problem the intensity of the problem will change as the emotional roaches are destroyed. If you are treating a more complex problem, a specific feeling or thought may go away and another take its place. Keep tapping until nothing more comes to mind. This is how to defeat your dreadful roaches. Notice that there are now less of them or that they have been wiped out completely. When you feel positive and relaxed it means that you are at zero.
My student friends had to perform the roach ritual weekly since, although they certainly decimated the army of vermin, they were never completely free of them because they didn’t treat the source. This is true of all of us. Even after resolving a major issue in your life it is doesn’t mean that you will live happily ever after. There are always new challenges awaiting you. Make EFT a regular part of your life and you can nip problems before they become infestations.
