I have recently come across 3 articles about scientific studies that now show that mindfulness methods lower blood pressure, improve teachers’ wellbeing and is beneficial for people suffering from COPD. Mindfulness is simply single focused awareness. i discovered that if I test myself using my home blood pressure machine after doing something stressful, and then use EFT tapping, my blood pressure goes down. We can think of EFT as a mindfulness method since as you tap each point you are focused both on the acupressure point that you are tapping as well as on a negative thought, emotion or sensation.
Meditators frequently repeat a mantra or simply the sound Om over and over again. One of my clients has practiced yoga for many years and demonstrated a breathing technique that she was taught that produces profound calm. I want to pass that along to you since it is so simple that anyone can do it.
All you have to do is to sit quietly and inhale as you count from 1 to 5 in your mind. As you do, allow your belly to swell out. Then exhale slowly as you count to 7. Do this for a few minutes and see how much it quiets you.
The other day I practiced this slow breathing for a while as I was on my way to have my hair cut. Soon I felt very serene. When my hairdresser began to work on me I found myself yawning and yawning without stop. I was puzzled by this since I had been feeling very energized that morning. Then it dawned on me that I had been doing mindfulness breathing just before my appointment!
Please give this a try. Use it when you are feeling rushed, stressed or unable to sleep. Teach it to your children too. I bet that it can help them before taking a test or dealing with scary moments.
